Analysis of a Post Modern video

This song is a post modernism music video due to the fact that it uses the film 'Barbarella' as an influence for the video. This video uses the sci-fi theme of the film to make a parody video. This is shown in the still to the right as it shows the singer picking up an obviously fake boulder for a few minutes and then he throws it away. This is quite funny as he does so in quite a dramatic and carefree way.

These two shots are similar in a way as they are both lying down in a similar way, wearing strange clothes which suggest an intertextual link between the two images. This shows the singer portraying the main character in the film 'Barbarella' in the way he is positioned and dressed. This further illustrates that the video is a parody of the film due to the fact that a male is acting as a stereotypical female character who would have likely to have had sex appeal and this is not something you would usually see in anything other than a parody.

This shot shows a giant red octopus-like creature attacking the spaceship. This is done in a light-hearted sort of fashion which makes the audience realise that they are not taking the video seriously or are they in real danger. This suits the atmosphere of the video and song as it is upbeat and happy.
This shot adds to the parody element of the video as the singer is on a different world with a giant crap-like creature and what he does is gives the camera a thumbs up. This shows that the video isn't all that serious as if it was then he would be fighting the creature in some sort of heroic way rather than not taking it seriously and giving a thumbs up.

Vox Pops

What is a Vox Pop?

A Vox Pop is a interview where you get random people off the street to answer a few questions in front of a camera to get there opinions and ideas.

This is what a good Vox Pop includes:

Good Questions

  • What are your expectations when you watch  a music video?
  • What is your favourite genre?
  • What style of music video do you like best?
  • What is your all time favourite music video?
  • What conventions do you like to see in a video?
  • What storyline do you like to see in a music video?

This is our Vox Pop

Q1) What's your favourite music genre?
A)  We got many different music genres such as classic rock, pop, country and R&B. We asked this to find out what people enjoy and what type of people enjoy certain kinds of music.
We wanted to find this out so that we can make sure we take what type of thing people like that has already been done into consideration. This is so that we can look at the popular techniques and apply some of the relevant techniques to our music promo if possible. This is so that our promo will be popular with our target audience.

Q2) Whats your favourite music video of all time?

A) We got a mixture of videos like Katy Perry 'Thinking Of You' and Arctic Monkeys 'Snap Out Of It'. We asked this to a) see what different genre of music include in their video and b) to see what people enjoy and it seems they enjoy a narrative in their videos.
We wanted to find this out to also find out what was popular so that we can make sure our production will be as popular to our target audience as these music promos are to their target audiences. This will help us make a more effective promo as we can apply a narrative to our video as well as performance to make the promo look good in the eyes of our target audience.

Post Modernisim and the Music Video

What is Postmodernism?

Postmodernism is when you take something old or cannon and play around to create something newer and different.
  • sceptical or playful interpretations of culture
  • Intertexuality - borrowing ideas
  • reusing old styles
  • satirising
  • adding to past tradition - innovative
  • transforming the past
  • mixing genres
  • plays with reality
  • Avante garde with old school images
  • remodelling the past

The 3 stages of genre

The experimental stage of genre attempts to establish trends
The cannon stage works within those trends to fix them into our cultural understanding
The post-modernism stage looks at trends, laughs at them, pokes them with a stick and adds something new in
Thereby creating a new experimental stage etc

Intertextuality

  • Homage - Imitation is the highest form of flattery
  • Pastiche - Using the imagery of one text ti make a comment about another one
  • Parody - Taking the mickey

Analysis of lyrics improved

Lyric Visuals

This song is about a break up and trying to get over the person you broke up with. The words that are repeated the most are heart and break which suggests that the song is about heart break and that we should try and work with this huge aspect with the song in our music promo

My ideas for the promo

Your empty promises
Stop filling up my mind while my loves’ away
Temptation calls me
To this and loveless fools believe
Their guilty hearts still bleed
But their cold lifeless heart beats wear them out
[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn't deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I know I'm better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go
My insecurities
Playing on my mind, colours never change
You should come back, come back, come back (And look for more)
But love that runs too deep
Stolen moments we couldn't keep
You should go before the night time lets you down
[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn't deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I know I'm better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go (x2)
Heart break, heart break
Heart break (tonight I let you go)
Heart, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart heart break
Tonight, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break
I just keep on running
You’re the heart break
I couldn't deal with
You were the mistake that no-one could save me from
But I know I'm better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go (x3)

The Colours

The Colours are an organic band from Reading, UK and describe themselves as a Pop, dance, alternative style band.

The band members are:
  • Tom Pickford - Vocals, Keys, Guitar
  • Tom Newman - Bass, Synthesizers, Backing Vocals
  • Tony Folland - Drums, Sequencing, Percussion

  • The Colours are now on a tour of the UK as promotion for their debut single 'Tonight I Let You Go'. The tour travels the length and breadth of the country so be sure to keep up to date with when they're visiting you. The single is available to download exclusively through Indiestore at present, with a view to charting in the independent charts at the beginning of May, if you haven't got your copy yet just click on this link... BUY SINGLE The single, Tonight I Let You Go is a song about the trials of the heart in the formative years; the movement from one relationship to the other. But this isn’t a soppy love story; far from it. Planting a brave face on the inner discomfort exposed within the lyrics, this upbeat number puts a lighter spin on darker issues; and it’s a paradigm that becomes all the more apparent when you meet the band members themselves. Even in casual conversation a sense of youthful theatrics buoyed with an almost innocent optimism prevails to the forefront. It’s certainly an infectious combination, but perhaps uncertain whether this bravado is a natural virtue or concealing more fragile tendencies. Analysis of the lyrics gives more insight into this realm, and it is from here that they have an outlet to let hidden emotions run wild and free. Notwithstanding this, The Colours do not take themselves too seriously. Their euphoric stage sound is best summed up in the wry words of chief songwriter and singer Tom Pickford, “I suppose we're a bit more tragic than the Hoosiers, but less Danish than Alphabeat”. ‘Tonight I Let You Go’ was recorded and produced at Cottage Road Studios in Leeds with Andy Hawkins & Matthew Peel (Kaiser Chiefs/Pigeon Detectives). Perhaps it was not the most obvious match on paper, however studio sessions progressed so well work is underway on the debut album, due next year. You can expect a showcase for all things pop coupled with electronic intonations that border on Europop and melodies akin to early Wham. It will be an album to dance to, even if the lyrics leave you shedding a tear. Track for Music Video

The Colours - Tonight I let You Go

The song is about 3 minutes long and has no known copyright. The bands genre is a mix between pop, dance and alternative which makes it an appropriate track to turn into a video as the tempo and style is good to be able to do narrative and performance for. The lyrics are below and they give us some clear images as to what we want to with the video. The bands image suits a band who has an alternative genre.

    CD cover analysis

This is the CD cover and CD design for the album 'Bones' by Young Guns.

It features the logo of the band on the CD and the back page of the CD cover which is considered relatively conventional as a lot of bands like using their logo on their merchandise. The front of the CD cover has a theme with their music video of the song 'Bones' as the girl in the narrative dances similarly to how the girl is positioned on the cover and the locations are similar as well. It is done quite artistically which is fairly conventional as quite a few bands in a similar genre use this style to reflect the emotion to the album.
