The camerawork for this promo is conventional as there are mainly mid shots, long shots and close ups in this promo. This is conventional for this genres promos as most of them use these three types of shots as the main shot types in the promo. The close ups are of the singer and some important items such as the phone and the money that was on the floor. This is conventional as promos usually have close ups of the singer and some other important items in the promo. The mid shots are the main type of shot that is used and they are of all sort of things such as the singer, the other people and some of the location. The long shots are also used in a similar way to the mid shots.
This promo also uses a lot of tracking and panning shots during the narrative as the camera follows the singer as he walks along and will also pan over to the other peoples reactions so the audience can see the reactions of the other people so that they can see how the behaviour affects them.
The composition of the promo is conventional as the singer is placed in a position that shows that he is the most important thing in the promo and when he isn't the thing that is placed clearly as the focus of the shot so that the audience knows what is the focus of the shot and what isn't.
Editing
The editing in this promo is pretty conventional as it is cut to the tempo of the song and when the song gets a bit faster or heavier so does the editing. The other main editing technique is the straight cuts. This is also very conventional as most promos in this genre use straight cuts when making a promo due to the fact that was about making things that were different so not using that many editing techniques would have been different to the mainstream genres such as pop, who like to use more editing techniques than a lot of other genres do.
Mise-en-scene
Lighting: The lighting in this promo is conventional for this genre as it uses artificial and natural lighting during the different scenes in this promo. The artificial lighting is used when the narrative takes place inside and uses natural lighting when outside. This is conventional as this is what most promos do with the lighting as it is realistic and simple to do.
Costumes: The costumes in this promo are conventional as the people are in casual clothes, making it look more realistic. This is what a lot of the promos in this genre do as they want a slightly more realistic view to the promo. The singer is wearing a very conventional look for an alternative band which is jeans, vest, boots and a check shirt. This seems to be the style that a lot of the alternative bands/artists follow making this conventional for the genre.
Props: There are not many props in this promo. The main props that are used are a phone, a fan, money, a car and bats. Not having that many props seems to be conventional as a lot of the alternative promos that are around don't seem to have that many props. Although this does depend on the narrative and performance it seems to be conventional not to have that many props in the promo.
Locations: There are several different locations in this promo. There is the bedroom, the pool, the reception, outside the door and the outside location a bit further on from the door. Whether or not this is conventional depends on the bands and the concept of the promo. Usually there are one or two main locations but in this promo there are about five different main locations that get the same amount of screen time as the others.
Performance/Narrative
The performance is within the narrative as the singer is lip-synching throughout the song. This can be quite conventional within the alternative genre as narratives can be pretty important to help show the message of the song. However, this can also be unconventional for a promo from this genre as a lot of the bands/artists have a separate performance within the promo as well as the narrative. The narrative of the promo is conventional for this genre as the narrative fits with the meaning of the song and focuses on a few lyrics that capture that meaning well. In this promo the lyrics 'Baby if you could would you go back to the start? Take any fresh steps or watch it all fall apart again?' are what the narrative is focused on as it shows the singer having the day go back to the beginning to before he got the phone call as something bad happened to him so the narrative goes back to the shot it started at and the day starts over again. This time the singer is nice to people instead of taking whatever upset him out on everyone he sees as he did in the first part of the narrative. However, the narrative ends the way it had the last time even though he changed his behaviour to try and stop that from happening. This is basically what the song is about, realising that even if you could go back and change what you did it might happen the same way anyway or the results might be the same as before you want back and changed it.
Theory
One theory that applies to this promo is Knight's theory 'Genre may offer various emotional pleasures, such as empathy and escapism. We enjoy identifying with the characters and imaging ourselves living out their experiences'.
The second theory that applies to this promo is Allen's theory 'To make sense of any text audiences require "cultural capital" i.e. they bring their knowledge and experience of a text in order to understand it'.
