Genre

Media Theory: "genre is no longer a fixed set of elements"

I think this means that genre can be a lot of different things that are edited and changed throughout the years

Buckingham (1990): argues that genre is a "constant process of negotitation and change"

I think this means that genre is a lot of different things mixed together and that it changes all the time.

Why is the concept of genre attractive/useful to an audience?

  • It is predictable
  • It fulfils the audiences expectations
  • It creates a way of communicating to the audience in a 'short-hand' way
  • It allows a quick set up of character or plot
  • It also needs a innovation or twist to avoid a cliché or boredom
  • It mixes the familiar and unfamiliar
