Biffy Clyro - Mountains

This video has a cool narrative as it involves two kings, 'the mountain and the sea' which links to the lyrics "I am the mountain, I am the sea", sitting on a throne next to chess board. When they move a piece on the chess board, their warriors move with them and then begin fighting each other in a setting that vaguely resembles a chess board with the black and white flooring. The narrative ends with the mountain's warrior winning, the sea taking off his hat, resembling a crown, and both kings walking into the middle of the board to sing at each other, signifying check mate.

The camerawork, editing and performance is conventional as there are straight cuts, mid shots, close up of instruments and faces, long shots and the band is playing their instruments so it looks like they are playing live.

The mise-en-scene fits in with the narrative as there are warrior and king costumes , the location looks a bit like a chess board, the props are a chess board, thrones, weapons and the lighting is artificial as they are inside.

During the performance the mise-en-scene is fairly conventional with the artificial lighitng, similar location as narrative, casual clothes and instruments.

CD Covers

CD album covers are typically the artist/band doing something e.g. posing, a theme within the album or a logo the band identifies with.

These are the lyrics we are going to use from this song:

Robbie Williams - Let Me Entertain You Intertextuality Analysis

This promo uses intertextuality in a slight parody way. Robbie Williams is referencing Kiss, Ozzie Osbourne and Gene Simmons. He is likely to be doing this as before this promo was released he had just left Take That who were a boy band so he is probably trying to get away from that image and create his own. He is doing this by parodying the famous metal bands as he copies the stage make-up Kiss wore. He also tries to reference Gene Simmons in the picture on the right by showing his tongue as Gene Simmons is well known for having a really long tongue which he showed quite a lot while wearing the stage make-up.

Robbie also tries to reference Ozzie Osbourne in the beginning of the promo as he looks like he is going to bite the head off of a dove but instead lets it go. This is referencing the event where Ozzie bit the head off of a dead bat on stage after someone had thrown it on stage.

To also reference the metal genre, he makes the typical metal poses during the performance part of the promo. He is also wearing the metal type costumes that bands like Kiss would have worn as well as the doing the poses, having low key lighting with smoke effects that lots of metal bands used while on stage and even in their promos and the arena stage location that a lot of metal bands played on.

In this shot Robbie looks slightly dazed and possibly on drugs or insane. This is done to further the idea of the metal look as a lot of metal bands were either on drugs or acted kind of insane and sometimes both. He looks like he is backstage which quite realistic and is part of the narrative.

In this shot Robbie looks slightly crazed/angry. This is also a reference to the metal genre as this is a typical shot and expression for a metal singer. This is used to help keep an image of what the band is like and what people expect from the rock genre.
