Changes when filming

Possible photo for digipack

This is the photo we will use in the digipak about the band. Our band will be Hope and Josh, Josh as the singer and Hope will be the instrumentals/actor for videos. This will make our band seem different and appealing to both genders. In lots of alternative/indie bands it is a mixture of genders in the band. This also works for us as we use both Hope and Josh.

Final Location in promo

Here is our final location for the music promo. We decided not to film in a garage but the kitchen as we can use one side without appliances to look like a light art studio. This look good to film as it was bright but also conventional to our genre as it wasn't too OTT but very natural and realistic,

Performance Actor

By choosing Hope and Josh to star in our promo it will make it more conventional and typical to the genre. As they both are quite arty they will suit the video, and also make the video look more arty. As this theme is what we want to achieve and will suit the genre then they will be great for the promo.

They are quite natural in front of the camera and can show many feelings that are needed e.g. sadness. This will make them more like an alternative/indie promo/actors and will also make the video more realistic.

Storyboard

Permissions

Here are our permission slips from the location and actors for our music video.

Font feedback

We asked our audience to choose between 5 different fonts. Font 1 and font 5 were the most popular among our audience. To choose between these two fonts we will be make 2 copies of our poster with the two popular fonts on it and then ask our audience to choose which one they prefer out of the two posters.

Actors and justifications

For our music video we are using Hope. She will be able to represent the girl in the video well as she can paint well and portray a heartbroken girl. This is conventional as well as heartbroken girls are very common. Also as she is mid-teens she will be similar to many girls going through the same. Our genre keeps the actors quite plain and natural so we will try and achieve this by making her seem quite natural/relatable.

Audience Feedback on Promo/Digpack/Advert

To gain some audience feedback on everything we've done so far, we handed out questionnaires to people who our similar to our target audience (aged 17-19, male and female). We showed them our digipak & poster as well as playing the song and explaining the idea.

Most people liked our idea and preferred much more to our other as its unique. They also liked the art aspect as its creative and will keep them watching it again and again. They said one thing we could change is the performance and have it done in the garage/art studio too. When filming we will try this out.

(insert pie chart). We asked people if they thought the song and video would match. 10 out of 11 said yes, while 1 said no as they thought its too much of a pop video and said that if we maybe included more performance it would fit more so we will add some more performance. Once they saw the storyboard matched with the lyrics they said the singing and story line work well together and the narrative is like a puzzle almost.

For the fourth question we asked if it fits our genre. Everyone said due to the quirkiness of the video and the arty aspect that it does as many alternative/indie videos have an art vibe to it. Also the heartbreak theme is like it as many songs from this genre are e.g. Arctic Monkeys - Arabella etc. The animation also fits as its different and not done often. Although people said that the clips we showed them were too short, so we will make longer one to practice/ see if it works.

The digipak and poster were liked by people. They liked how a similar theme was kept throughout and the picture fits to the song. They said that the digipak could include less about tours and more about the band and maybe include the lyrics. When making the final digipak we will include band info/lyrics as it will appeal more to our audience.

Health and Safety: Risk Assessment

To film in the garage we will need to move boxes and other things from the garage. We could drop something and hurt ourselves. To minimise this risk we will be careful not to carry something that is too heavy for us to carry so that we won't drop them.

Risk Assessment

During filming our production we will have many risks that need to be taken into account to ensure the health and safety of not only the actors/actresses, but also ourselves.

Venue: Garage
Description of activity: Filming our music video in a art studio like setting including dressing the set, installing lights & moving heavy objects.

Possible HAZARDS:
  • dropping/falling heavy objects on people (4)
  • fairy lights and fabric could cause a fire or heat (4)
  • food and drink could cause slippery surface (2)
  • inappropriate clothing (1)
(1- low hazard, 2-3- medium hazard, 4-5 - high hazard)

Control measures:
  • no food and drink on set
  • wear correct clothing
  • fairy lights will not go near fabric
  • all heavy objects removed or put securely on floor
To make sure there are no risks we will get everyone on set to follow these requirements.

Digipack Inspirations

For our digipak we are going to go for a hand-drawn/painted style to it. We are doing this as it links to our band name and adds a unique twist to the digipak. We have taken inspiration from these three digipak's as they are drawn/painted. They are also of similar genre so our digipak won't be unconventional and will be sticking to its genre/style. Also the fonts on it are similar to ours.

This digipak in particular is very inspiring as it has a simple and classic look to it which is what we want.

Magazine Advert Inspirations

For our magazine advert we looked at adverts done by bands similar to our genre. For our advert we want it similar to the digipak; where its drawn and links to song/band. These few caught my eye as they are similar as they are arty and simplistic. They are also similar to out genre so fit to conventions.

Marketing and promotional strategies used by Record Labels

Analysis of a magazine cover

This is the magazine advert for Madonna's album 'Celebration'. The advert links into the CD cover as it is basically the same image and text style as the CD cover. This will make the audience notice it better as they will be able to tell straight away what it is. This is also quite conventional as lots of artists link their albums, promos, and adverts to a certain theme throughout the production, marketing and exhibition/distribution so that the fans can link these things together.
The text is clear to read but also links in with the style of the advert. This is conventional as the text needs to be easy to read so that people will read it as they walk past and if the text links in with the theme of the advert then people will be more likely to take notice of the advert than if the advert is boring and the text doesn't link in.
The advert has an arty theme as Madonna looks like she has been painted on the wall rather than a photograph and the text also links in with the arts theme as it looks like it has been sprayed painted on the wall. This makes the advert stand out as it is pretty unique and very rememberable. This makes the advert more effective as more people will stop to look at it and take the time to read the information at the bottom. This could lead to people going on the website and doing what the advert wants people to do.

Analysis of a CD cover

This CD cover has a similar design to the one that we are going to do as it is in black and white but has a splash of colour. This is what we are planning on doing on our digipack as it relates well to the song and band.

This cover is in black and white with a bit of colour coming out of the cigarette the singer is smoking. In the background we can see a small town with desert surrounding it. The imagery gives the impression of death and pollution but also that things can be have a beautiful or good side to them. The colourfulness of the smoke symbolises this while the black and white of the background, singer, and cigarette symbolises the death and pollution.
This cover also illustrates what the album is inspired by; Los Vegas, the home city of the band. Using the quote from the singer "There's some glitz, some glamour, but there's also the dingy, old Vegas side to the music." I can tell that the album is showing their audience glamour, with the colourful smoke, and something old and dingy, the location and how the singer is dressed.
This cover is quite simplistic which suggests that the band wanted this album to not have the same image of their other stuff. This further suggests that the bands style has changed, that they are no longer trying to find who they are and what they are like. Another reason the cover is simplistic is because they want the image to stand out more and for the cover to be remembered. The cover is likely to be remembered as it is simplistic but also effective, it looks good.
The text is black, fitting with the theme of the cover. The album name is in a smaller font and is in uppercase. The name of the band is bigger, clearer to read, and is in lowercase. This suggests that the band name is more important than the album title as fans of the band are more likely to see the name and look at it which is likely to lead to the fans buying the album more than if it was the other way round. This is very conventional for album covers as it is a marketing tool because the audience are more likely to look at it if it has the bands name on it in clear, large letters.

Costume and Justification

As our music video focuses on an artist we decided to go for a typical look e.g. the oversized shirt as a form of protection from the paint.
A pair of leggings as they are probably on of the most comfortable items of clothing in the world, this would make them an ideal item of clothing for a female to wear when they are going through a hard time as they don't particularly want to put a huge amount of effort into what they look like.
We went with a high top style of shoe as they are very common and the majority of people own a pair which could have a positive effect on the viewers as they could see something that they own and feel like they can relate to the character in an odd sort of way,.
